Lyon Sweater by PetiteKnit in Sandnes Garn Sunday

I loved Ryan’s sweater so much that I had to make myself one. While browsing PetiteKnit’s website, I noticed that you can filter her patterns by shoulder type: raglan, set-in sleeves, circular yoke, saddle shoulder, and European shoulder. The Lyon sweater is one of her four patterns with the European shoulder. The shoulder seam is shifted towards the back of the body, creating a more tailored fit around the shoulder and armhole. I absolutely love it.

Size

The Lyon sweater was designed with approximately 7-3/4 inches of positive ease and fits a bust circumference of 31.5 to 59 inches. I knitted a size XL (39.5 – 43.25 inch bust) for myself, one size larger than what I typically knit from PetiteKnit.

My chest measurement is 40 inches, putting me on the edge between size L and XL. In the past, the PetiteKnit sweaters I’ve made have had 10+ inches of ease with lots of room for the shoulders, so I felt OK making a size L (37.5-39.5 inch bust). However, the Lyon sweater is much more fitted for PetiteKnit, and based on Ryan’s sweater, I knew I needed to make a size XL instead.

Yarn, Gauge and Needles

The pattern recommends roughly 650 grams of Sunday by Sandnes Garn (two strands held together). I used the recommended yarn, Sunday by Sandnes Garn, in the Lt Sienna 4025 colorway. My final sweater weighs 584 grams, which is approximately 11.7 skeins. I didn’t include stripes in my sweater, so that’s probably where the discrepancy is between the recommended amount and the amount I used. I was able to acquire the appropriate stitch gauge (20 sts x 30 rows = 10 x 10 cm [4 x 4 inches] in stockinette stitch on 4 mm [US6] needles).

Alterations

I didn’t make any changes to the pattern except lengthen the sleeves and body. I knit 16 extra rows for the sleeves after the last decrease before starting the 1 x 1 rib cuff. My sleeves measure 18 inches from the armpit.

The final garment should measure 25-1/4 from the mid-back, excluding the neck edge. However, I lengthened the body some. My sweater measures 26 inches from the mid-back.

Final Fit

Conclusions

Although I don’t have the fit issues Ryan has with raglan sleeves, I definitely like the more tailored look of the Lyon sweater. I love this sweater style, and I hope PetiteKnit makes more patterns with the European shoulder!
