Down Pants: Modified Know Me ME2041

A quick note for my subscribers who receive my posts as newsletters in their inbox. WordPress.com now allows me to set how replies are handled. Before, whenever anyone replied, their reply would be placed as a public comment on the post. I’m now able to have replies sent to my email instead. I know this has been frustrating and a problem for people in the past when they’ve shared personal information that they’d rather not have publicly posted.

Since completing this project, I can confidently say: I’m never, EVER taking off my down pants. They’re warm, cozy, and astonishingly lightweight. If you haven’t read about my down coat adventures, please check out that blog post first. There’s a lot I’m not covering here because it is already detailed in that post, including recommendations for thread, needle, and explanations of what fill power means, etc.

Pattern and Supplies

Pattern

For this project, I needed a pattern that provided ample room in the torso, crotch curve, and upper thighs. Initially, I considered the Topo Pants by Leila Makes. While I loved the knee darts and straight side seam, my recent analysis of balance lines using the Topo Pants revealed some fitting challenges that made it unsuitable, so I opted for a more familiar choice: the Know Me ME2041 pattern.

The Know Me pattern fits me well, but since I’ve dropped at least two pant sizes since January 2024, adjustments were necessary.

My current body measurements are 33 inch waist, 41 inch hips, and 42 inch torso (as measured with the poster band). That definitely puts me at a size 40 or 42 down from a size 46. However, knowing that down stuffing causes shrinkage, I sized up to size 44 for this project.
