So Faded Sweater by Drea Renee Knits

I finally knitted something amazing! I have envied anyone who has made the So Faded sweater. Self-doubt has held me back for a long time. Would my knitting skills be good enough? I didn’t want even to attempt this sweater because I didn’t want to spend that kind of money on yarn. In the end, it was worth the worrying and fretting.

I started my project on August 22nd. I spent days swatching to figure out what size needle to use. Superwash merino is a funny thing. It loves to stretch out like crazy when washed; however, you can always bring it back to its original size by drying it in the dryer. The gauge for this sweater is 25 stitches and 32 rows in 4 inches in stockinette stitch in the round and blocked.

For my first swatch, I used a needle size US 5 (3.75 mm) and got 28 stitches / 38 rows; wet 26 stitches / 32 rows; blocked and air-dried 28 stitches / 36 rows; machine washed and dried 28 stitches / 40 rows.

For my second swatch, I used a needle size US 6 (4.00 mm) and got 25 stitches / 32 rows; wet 26 stitches / 32 rows; machine washed and dried 28 stitches / 38 rows; blocked and air-dried 25-26 stitches / 32 rows.

YARN

For my project I used Woolen Boon Classic in 5 colorways: Woodland, Robin Sparkles, Grievances, Ambrosia Salad, and Sourpuss. My fade ended up:

  • Woodland 32 rows (4″)
  • Fade Woodland to Robin Sparkles 10 rows (1.25″)
  • Robin Sparkles 30 rows (3.75″)
  • Fade Robin Sparkles to Grievances 10 rows (1.25″)
  • Grievances 30 rows (3.75″)
  • Fade Grievances to Ambrosia Salad 10 rows (1.25″)
  • Ambrosia Salad 30 rows (3.75″)
  • Fade Ambrosia Salad to Sourpuss 10 rows (1.25″)
  • Sourpuss 30 rows (3.75″)

This was the hardest thing for me to figure out. I’m so glad my calculations worked. I selected these colors myself and didn’t use any predetermined fade. I wanted something subtle, and I’m glad with how the colors turned out. It’s a very neutral fade until the bottom with just a hint of lime green.

NOTES

In the end, it took me only two weeks to complete the sweater! I thought it would take 2-3 months. The only thing I changed was the length of the sleeves. I knitted 30 rows of Sourpuss and then did my cuff, which was 16 rows. I knew that the sweater would grow after washing, so I ended the sleeve just above my wrist. After washing, the sleeve length is perfect.
